Congratulations to the Colonels softball team for their 8-2 win over Sherando yesterday to take 1st place in the district and in doing so clinching an automatic berth into the regional tournament. Ivy Rosenberry was stellar in the circle pitching all 7 innings with 11 strikeouts. Leading the Colonels at the plate was Rebecca Boone 1-2 with a grand slam home run in the first inning and 5 RBIs, Afton Sykes was 2-3 with a double, and Rosenberry went 2-4. Hannah Davis and Mackenzie McCarty were each 2-3 with solo home runs. Jenna Burkhamer was 1-1 with 2 walks. The Colonels will host a district tournament semifinal game on Tuesday.

The varsity baseball team ended its regular season being shutout for the first time all year to the Fauquier Falcons, losing 3-0. Aden Payne pitch four solid innings with Jacob Bell and Luke Gross finishing the game. The Colonels were held to only three hits on the night, coming from Kaden Spaid, Hayden Cunningham, and Tylor McBride. The Colonels will travel to either Fauquier or Kettle Run on Friday to start the district tournament. The JV baseball team lost both ends of a home double-header to the Falcon to conclude its season.

James Wood lost another hard-fought game last night to the Millbrook Pioneers. Luke Gross held Millbrook to one hit in five scoreless innings pitched to close out the game. Colby Monroe, Tylor McBride, Jaden Ashby, Aden Payne, and Jayden Nixon recorded a hit a piece. The lone run was score for the Colonels with a sacrifice fly from Lucas Whitacre. The Colonels are back in action on Tuesday at Fauquier to close out the regular season. The first round of the Northwestern District playoffs will be next Friday.

James Wood Colonels lost a hard-fought battle last to the Liberty Eagles, 7-5. The Colonels were led by Aden Payne with 5 innings pitched. Hayden Cunningham led the Colonels offensively with two doubles. The Colonels tied the game at 5 in the bottom of the 6th, but left the bases loaded with two outs. The Eagles took advantage and scored two runs in the top of the 7th to secure the win. The Colonels are back in action tonight at Sherando with game time at 6:00. They then host Millbrook for Senior Night on Thursday.

James wood colonels varsity wins contest against spring mills 7-4 James wood got things moving in the first inning when Colby Monroe single on a 2-2 count scoring Jaden Ashby that lead off the game with a double. James wood scored four more runs in the fourth. Aden Payne was the winning pitcher for the colonels. Allowing five hits and three runs while striking out six. Nate White threw one inning in relief out of the pullen pin and earns the save. James wood collect ten hits on the night, Tylor Mcbride, Kaden Spaid, Lucas Whitacre, and Colby Monroe manage multiple hits for the Colonels. Colonels are back in action Thursday against Fauquier at home.

James Wood Colonels varsity baseball run ruled the Judges in six innings on Tuesday. The Colonels allowed two runs between four pitchers on six hits. Aden Payne, Jacob Bell, Nate White, and Joe Spielman threw for James Wood. The bats for the Colonels came alive with eleven hits. The Colonels scratched runs in every inning, scoring 12 runs in six innings. Leading hitters were Jayden Ashby 2-4 (double), Aden Payne 2-3 (4 RBI’s), Kevin Brown 1-1 (walk, HBP), Jayden Nixon 2-4, Colby Monroe 1-3 (double, walk), Tylor McBride 3-4, and Nate White 1-2 (double). The Colonels face district foe Kettle Run on Thursday at home starting at 6:00.

James Wood Colonels varsity baseball defeated Warren County 1-0 as two pitchers combined to throw a shutout. Jacob Bell earned the victory on the hill for James Wood Colonels. He lasted five innings, allowing four hits and zero runs while striking out two and walking zero. Aden Payne threw two innings with five strikeouts in relief out of the bullpen. Jayden Nixon, Aden Payne, Hayden Cunningham, and Tylor McBride each managed one hit for the Colones. In the third inning, Aden Payne recorded an RBI single scoring Tylor Mcbride for the only score of the game. The Colonels are back in action for their annual Veterans Game on Tuesday against the Handley Judges at 6:00 PM.

James Wood Colonels varsity baseball team fell to Millbrook 8-7 on Thursday on the final play of the game. The game was tied in the bottom of the ninth when an error scored the winning run for Millbrook. James Wood collected nine hits. Aden Payne was 3-5, Kevin Brown was 2-3, and Hayden Cunningham was 1-5 with a home run. The Colonels are back in action on Wednesday at Warren County.

James Wood Varsity baseball wins in extra innings! The Colonels traveled to Liberty High for a district contest. Aden Payne started for the Colonels on the mound throwing 6-1/3 with 8 hits three earned and eight strikeouts. The Colonels struck first in the third inning with a bunt by Lucas Whitacre who was moved to second by a sac bunt by Jayden Ashby. Colby Monroe knocked in Whitacre for the first run of the game. The Eagles tieD the game at one in the bottom of the third. The Colonels struck for three runs in the 4th to make it 4-1 by the way of a Jayden Nixon double, Kevin Brown single, and Jayden Ashby triple. Liberty struck back with two of their own making it 4-3 in the bottom of the 4th. Payne doubled to start the 7th. Andrew Waters singled to right scoring Payne. The Colonels would add two more from a hit from Kaden Spaid scoring Brown who walked and Waters. The Eagles fought back to tie it up in the bottom of the 7th, 7-7. In extras it would go back and forth. White would come in first relief for the Colonels throwing 1-2/3 innings with four hits one earned and three strike outs. The Colonels scored two in the top of the twelfth with a single by Daniel Copenhaver scoring Brown and Hayden Cunningham. Joe Spielman came in with his best stuff of the season in the 8th throwing for the final twelve outs of the game with two hits one earned and one strikeout. Notable players of the game were Hayden Cunningham went two for six with a double and single. Monroe 2-6, Payne 2-6, Whitacre 2-5, Copenhaver 1-1. The Colonels are back in action Thursday night against rival Millbrook! Go Colonels!

James Wood Varsity baseball comes up just short after a thrilling finish: The Colonels struck first with a lead off triple by Jayden Ashby who was driven in by a sac fly from Colby Monroe making the score 1-0 after the first. Luke Gross started on the mound for the Colonels. Gross moved through first two innings quickly before giving up the first run for the Mussleman. The Appleman had a huge inning in the fourth, scoring 7 to pull away from the Colonels. Nate White came in relief in the fourth with three earned on two hits. Joe Spielman came on in the 7th, shutting down the Appleman’s bats with 3 up 3 down. In the bottom of the 7th the score 10-3 the Colonels scratch and clawed back with 6 runs. The inning was started by Kevin Brown with a single to right field. With two outs the Colonels would start their rally with a two run single by Jayden Ashby. With a walk to Colby Monroe putting two on Aden Aden Payne singled to right scoring Ashby making the score 10-6. Hayden Cunningham would add to the 7th inning hit parade with a single to right center scoring Monroe and he would move to second on a misplayed ball in the outfield. Jayden Nixon added another single to center to score Payne. Andrew Waters roped a ball down the left field line for a double scoring Cunningham moving Nixon to third lessening the deficit to 10-9. With the tying run on third in Nixon, Kevin Brown came up to the plate to tie but came up short with a routine fly ball the left to end the photo finish game 10-9 in favor of the Mussleman. The Colonels are back in action this afternoon against the district-leading Sherando Warriors with a 4:00 pm start.

James Wood Varsity baseball won 5-4 over Skyline at home Monday. The Colonels had seven combined hits by three players. Jayden Ashby was 3 for 3 with a home run, Jayden Nixon went 3 for 3, and Kaden Spaid was 1-3. Jacob Bell was on the mound for the Colonels throwing four innings with five hits, three earned runs, and five strikeouts. Three other pitchers made an appearance. Luke Gross came in for the fifth and sixth and Joe Spielman came in to get two outs in the 7th, while Aden Payne shut the door on the Hawks for the final out. The Colonels improve to 3-3 and are back at home on Wednesday at 7:00 PM against Mussleman.

James Wood improve to 2-2 on the year after winning 9-3 over the Handley Judges last night. The Colonels were led by senior Jacob Bell on the mound. He allowed five hits and three runs over six innings, striking out seven. The Colonels were led offensively by Aden Payne, Tylor McBride, Jaden Ashby, and Cobly Monroe who all had multiple-hit games. The Colonels are back in district action this Friday at Kettle Run.

Tuesday's varsity game against Spring Mills was a heartbreaker for James Wood in a 4-2 defeat. The Colonels tied the ball game in the 7th 2-2 with a few walks and a big 2-run hit by senior Colby Monroe. Spring Mills took back the lead in the top of the 8th with a couple of walks and timely hits. Aden Payne started for the Colonels, throwing 7 innings with 5 hits, 6 strikeouts, and two earned runs. The Colonels bats struggled with only 5 hits, two by senior Colby Monroe and one each for Tyler McBride, Aden Payne, and Hayden Cunningham. The Colonels are back in action Friday at Warren County.

The varsity baseball team scored six runs in the bottom of the 6th to beat Dominion 7-1 on Monday at home. Jacob Bell allowed only one run in six innings of work, and Luke Gross retired the Titans in order in the 7th to seal the win. The JV and varsity teams will host Spring Mills on Tuesday with games at 4:00 and 7:00.
