Cross country teams qualify for states
The girls' and boys' cross country teams both placed 2nd in Thursday's Region 4C Championships at Kernstown Battlefield. With the top three teams advancing to the VHSL state championships, the Colonels advanced the boys for the first time since their state runner-up finish in 2003, and the girls advanced for the first time since 1986.
The girls scored 74 points, finishing as runner-up to perennial power Loudoun Valley which scored 32, and ahead of 3rd-place finisher Millbrook (98). Sophomore Lauren Beatty bounced back from a down race at least week's district championship to finish 6th while senior teammate Kenzie Konyar placed 7th. Elena Farinholt and Quetzali Angel-Perez finished 19th and 20th, and Isabella Newman placed 32nd to round out the team's scoring.
The boys scored 104 and also finished as runner-up to two-time national champion Loudoun Valley which scored 16 points. Sophomore Nathaniel Woshner also had a bounce-back performance to lead the team with an 11th place finish. Fellow sophomore Liam McDonald placed 18th, Nathan Shade placed 24th, Chris White was 26th, and Caleb Kemer was 36th. The Colonels edged Millbrook which placed 3rd with 111 team points.
The 4A State Championships will be held on Saturday, November 16 at Great Meadow near Warrenton with the girls race at 10:30 and the boys at 11:15.
